This thick, fruit-filled drink\u00a0gets its purple color from a mixture of fruits\u00a0and purple corn flour. It has a unique taste from the different spices added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The exact preparation varies by family\u00a0\ud83d\udc6a and region\u00a0\ud83c\uddea\ud83c\udde8<\/strong>. Some serve it hot or warm; others prefer it chilled. The Colada Morada was traditionally used during the burial rites for the dead. It apparently started as a mixture of cornflour, potatoes, beans, peas, cabbage, achiote, and llama blood that has evolved into the fruit version popular today.<\/p>\n<p><!-- divi:paragraph -->Now every <strong>November 2nd<\/strong>, thousands of people bring this purple drink to the graves of their dead loved ones. <strong>One website called it &#8220;Ecuador&#8217;s Eggnog&#8221;<\/strong>, because of its popularity and the fact that it is typically only available during the season around the November holiday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cruisetogalapagos.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/COLADA_MORADA_Y_GUAGUAS_DE_PAN_ECUADOR_TRADITIONS.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" alt=\"Colada morada &amp; Guagua de pan Ecuador traditions\" class=\"wp-image-13344 aligncenter size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cruisetogalapagos.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/COLADA_MORADA_Y_GUAGUAS_DE_PAN_ECUADOR_TRADITIONS.jpg 900w, https:\/\/cruisetogalapagos.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/COLADA_MORADA_Y_GUAGUAS_DE_PAN_ECUADOR_TRADITIONS-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 900px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:heading --> <!-- \/divi:heading --> <!-- divi:heading --><\/p>\n<h2>Guaguas de Pan<\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/divi:heading -->The Guaguas de Pan. &#8220;<strong>Guagua&#8221; is the Quichua word for baby\u00a0\ud83d\udc76<\/strong>, so this is translated as &#8220;Bread Babies.&#8221; \ud83e\udd56\ud83d\udc76 The indigenous people of Ecuador traditionally left these at the burial site when someone died to mark the grave and to give the dead one food to eat.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph -->In the early 19th century the Catholics adopted this custom, but the &#8220;Guaguas&#8221; wasn&#8217;t edible. They were made specifically to decorate the graves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph -->Today every bread shop in the country sells &#8220;Guaguas&#8221; in the days leading up to the &#8220;Day of the Dead&#8221;. They are usually shaped like swaddled babies and decorated with\u00a0colored icing. This thick, fruit-filled drink\u00a0gets its purple color from a mixture of fruits and blue corn flour. It has a unique taste from the different spices added.\u00a0<br>The exact preparation varies by family and region. Some serve it hot or warm; others prefer it chilled. The Colada Morada was traditionally used during the burial rites for the dead.
