Their endemism, that is, the number of unique species in the world, covers 32% of the Islands.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Origin of the Galapagos Islands<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span>The Galapagos Islands <strong>emerged from the ocean 4 to 5 million years ago<\/strong>, as a result of underwater volcanic action. In geological terms, the islands are very young. As these new islands cooled, two million years later, <strong>certain species gradually arrived<\/strong> from Central and South America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span>These first immigrants quickly had to adapt to a new and peculiar environment. Later evolved into species different from those of its continental ancestors.
