Not for nothing were they called "enchanted islands". These islands, which were key to the work of a young Charles Darwin; who, astonished by the adaptability of the animals on the island, made great advances in his theory of evolution. Since those days of exploration have passed a couple of centuries. And yet there is much more to know about this amazing archipelago.

The Galapagos Islands emerged as a product of volcanic activity about 5 million years ago. And even today it continues to expand due to volcanic activity. In addition, this archipelago is considered one of the most active in the world, behind Hawaii.

History of the Islands

Since its discovery on March 10th, 1535 by Fray Tomás de Berlanga, these Islands were a place known due to its magic fauna and flora. And also described as "Insulae de los Gallopegos"

As a curious fact, we must explain that “Gallopegos”, later derived in Galapagos is a word that literally means turtle.

The origin of the term "Enchanted Islands" arose later, because they were uninhabited and usually covered with fog. Even some sailors said that the islands did not exist and it was only a mirage.

The pirates also visited the islands until 1816. But was on the 17th century and the navigator James Colnett made the first charts of navigation on the Galapagos Islands, describing them as rich in flora and fauna. As a result of this, many English visitors, who were the first settlers, came to the islands for the interest in knowing their species.

At the same time, there was the discovery of sperm whale fat, which attracted many whalers. All of which led to the creation of a post office.

Exploration of the Islands

The young naturalist Charles Darwin arrived on the Galapagos Islands on September 15, 1835, in order to carry out survey work and cartography. This, on board the British Ship Beagle, under the command of Captain Robert FitzRoy.

The tour in the islands was conducted for 5 weeks, and although he was on land for only two weeks, he was able to investigate the endemic fauna and flora of the archipelago. Later through observation and analysis, he was able to formulate the theory of the origin of the species.

The Galapagos Islands were declared a World Heritage Site in 1979 and in 1985 as a Biosphere Reserve.

Highlights

The hiding places are most easily reached by cruise and are a must when you visit the “Enchanted Islands”, for that reason we provide some general info.
