On June 24th<\/strong>, 2019, the Ministry of the Environment informed that the United Nations Organization for Education, Science, and Culture (UNESCO<\/strong><\/a>) decided to increase the size of the Biosphere Reserve<\/strong> in the Galapagos.<\/p>\n

In 1984, the year in which the creation of the reserve in the Galapagos Islands<\/a><\/strong> was adopted, it was limited to the land area. At first, it consists of a size of 772 thousand hectares. From now on, with this new approval, the Marine Reserve grows to 14.6 million hectares<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The proposal presented by the Galapagos National Park<\/strong> had the support of the Government of Flanders<\/strong>, WildAid,<\/strong> and Conservation International<\/strong>. The approval was given in Paris by the International Coordinating Council of the Program on Man and the Biosphere; As a result of this, they changed the name to the Galapagos Biosphere Reserve<\/strong>. As a result of this application, Ecuador has one of the largest Marine Biosphere Reserves in the world. And also, one of the most important<\/strong> marine areas internationally.<\/p>\n
