Galapagos increases the Biosphere Reserve Area

On June 24th, 2019, the Ministry of the Environment informed that the United Nations Organization for Education, Science, and Culture (UNESCO) decided to increase the size of the Biosphere Reserve in the Galapagos.

In 1984, the year in which the creation of the reserve in the Galapagos Islands was adopted, it was limited to the land area. At first, it consists of a size of 772 thousand hectares. From now on, with this new approval, the Marine Reserve grows to 14.6 million hectares.

The proposal presented by the Galapagos National Park had the support of the Government of Flanders, WildAid, and Conservation International. The approval was given in Paris by the International Coordinating Council of the Program on Man and the Biosphere; As a result of this, they changed the name to the Galapagos Biosphere Reserve. As a result of this application, Ecuador has one of the largest Marine Biosphere Reserves in the world. And also, one of the most important marine areas internationally.
