In 2018, the authorities of the Galapagos National Park managed to recover more than 22 tons of plastic waste on the islands. This type of pollution does not only visually affect landscapes; it also affects mainly the animal species that inhabit the archipelago. Many research studies allow the identification of many kinds of micro-plastics within animals. Turtles and some species of birds confuse plastic with food, which results in the inheritance of plastic waste. As a result of this practice, most animals die.

The Resolution

On May 21, 2015, the Government Council of Galapagos signed the resolution to prevent the entry of bottles or non-returnable containers to the islands. This resolution includes sodas, juices, bottled water, and sports drinks. The only exception is tonic water and sparkling water.

The resolution was approved for the first time in 2015 but did not get applied. On April 22, 2018, in commemoration of “Earth Day”, the resolution entered into force. The initiative has 4 stages, starting with plastic straws. Later it continues with plastic bags, flexible foams, and polyethylene containers. The final stage focused on non-returnable beverages.

Humans as key actors.

Because plastic pollution is the result of human activity, the call to action is for all of humanity. The local inhabitants of the Galapagos Islands, the people of Ecuador and foreigners from all over the world who visit the islands must follow the instructions of behavior and care of the environment.

GALAGENTS S.A. accepts this initiative and for that reason does not offer drinks in non-returnable containers. As a tour company, we also call our travelers to follow the rules within the Galapagos National Park. Our Cruises Galaxy First-class Yacht, EcoGalaxy First-class Catamaran, and Alya Luxury Catamaran are committed with the environment, by friendly practices on board.
