Know the most incredible birds of Galapagos
Galapagos Islands animals are amazing, and especially the Galapagos birds, in the Islands you can visit migratory and resident species. According to the Galapagos National Park Management Plan for Protected Areas, there are 79 bird species, 45 of them are endemic and only live in Galapagos Islands. Flightless cormorant
- This bird is unique in the world and amazes for its stunning turquoise eyes, short wings, and webbed feet, allowing it to dive into the ocean for food.
- Small colonies of 20 to 30 live in Fernandina and Isabela.
- Due to the evolution of millions of years, the bird lost its ability to fly.
- It reproduces between the months of May and October of each year. Their nests are made up of remains of fish, sea urchins, and dead starfish. Their eggs are incubated for approximately 35 days.
Red Footed Booby
- This bird belongs to the species of seabirds, is the smallest of its genus, and is known for its red webbed feet.
- It measures between 66 to 76 centimeters in length and feeds on fish and squid.
- Their plumage is white with brown and they only lay one egg every 15 months.
- They live on San Cristobal Island and share territory with the blue-footed boobies.
Galapagos Sparrowhawk
- These hawks are the only predators of marine iguanas, they also feed on other birds, small mammals, and lizards.
- In the Marchena and Pinta islands, a single female is related to multiple males. In the Santiago and Santa Fe islands, this behavior is observed in a small group of these birds.
- All males feed their babies.
Albatross
- These birds nest on the Española island that is the oldest in Galapagos. It is a monogamous species.
- Before the mating they do a previous dance, they are placed one in front of the other making sharp sounds shaking their heads, and raising their beaks.
- They are the biggest birds in the archipelago.
- They have a white neck, a yellow beak, pronounced black eyebrows, wings on the upper part, dark brown.
- They reproduce between January and March, the male and female hatch a single egg for 60 days.
Galapagos penguin
- It is an endemic bird that habits in the Fernandina and Isabela islands. It is the only penguin that lives in a tropical area.
- It is the third smallest species of penguin in the world.
- They put 2 eggs that are incubated by their parents for 40 days.
- Birds swim up to 50 kilometers per day and feed on small fish and crustaceans.
